Artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, transforming the way we communicate, work, and interact with technology. One such AI marvel that has captured widespread attention is ChatGPT. In this article, we’ll explore what ChatGPT is and how the average person can harness its capabilities to simplify tasks and enhance productivity.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT, short for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, is an AI language model developed by OpenAI. While Microsoft’s Copilot also uses OpenAI, it was initially oriented to an AI transformer model that was less conversational. ChatGPT belongs to the family of GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models trained on a vast body of text data available and already on the internet. ChatGPT is designed to generate human-like text responses based on the input it receives, making it a versatile tool for natural language understanding and generation independent of the software application you are using.

How Can the Average Person Use ChatGPT?
Virtual Assistant
ChatGPT will act as a virtual assistant, helping a user with a wide range of tasks and inquiries. Whether you need assistance with how to change a tire or upgrade Windows, ChatGPT gives answers to general questions in your natural language (your native tongue), akin to conversing with a human assistant.
Writing Assistance
For writers, students, and professionals, ChatGPT can write summaries, create outlines on subjects, or generate creative ideas. For example, you can take something you wrote and ask it to rewrite it in the voice of a pirate! It can also offer suggestions for improving writing and provide current topics for articles, essays, or presentations. Users can leverage ChatGPT to overcome writer’s block and improve the quality of written content.
Our summer intern Norah shared that she will take a complex topic for school and ask ChatGPT to explain it to a 10-year-old. That helps her simplify first as she then studies the more sophisticated answers and topics.
Language Translation
ChatGPT’s language capabilities extend to translation services. Users can input text in one language, and ChatGPT can generate fairly accurate translations into various target languages. This feature is useful for individuals communicating with others who speak different languages or for translating text passages for personal or professional purposes.
Learning and Education
Students and lifelong learners can benefit from ChatGPT’s knowledge and expertise as its “data lake” is filled with textbooks, articles, and news, so will output what can feel like encyclopedic knowledge. Of course, what it knows is derived from what it has learned from the work of others and will reflect those accuracies and inaccuracies. Nonetheless, ChatGPT can provide explanations, definitions, and insights on academic subjects, helping users understand complex concepts and deepen their knowledge in specific areas of interest.
Entertainment and Conversations
ChatGPT can also be a source of entertainment and engaging conversations. Users can chat with ChatGPT on a variety of topics, play text-based games, or engage in creative storytelling sessions. ChatGPT’s ability to generate contextually relevant responses makes interactions with it fun and immersive. It may even tell you it loves you!
Personalized Recommendations
ChatGPT can analyze user preferences and provide personalized recommendations for products, services, or content based on individual interests and past interactions. Whether book recommendations, movie suggestions, or travel advice, ChatGPT is able to eventually tailor its responses to your preferences. This is the same as what Netflix or other data streaming services do with personal recommendations based on past watching habits.
There is such a thing as Custom GPT, where you can train the transformer to learn your own voice by training it on your own dataset. Think of this as feeding the GPT documents written by you, in your voice.
ChatGPT represents significant advancement in AI technology, because of the ease of written or verbal conversation, much like Apple’s Siri, which is another form of (transformative) AI. As the average person learns more about ChatGPT’s capabilities, it may provide assistance, inspiration, or casual acquisition of information in a conversational mode.
ChatGPT has potential for positive impact but can also provide very generic responses. Use it for fun or to learn about something new!
